This is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Based on the intricate mousharabia lattice work and geometric carvings, this is a moorish style sideboard (often referred to as a "andalus chest" style applied to a larger cabinet).
These pieces are iconic to north and south of Morocco, particularly the Fez area and represent a unique blend of African, Arab, and berber influences ( the carving style)
Key Features of this Design
* Mashrabiya (Lattice Work): The prominent turned-wood screens on the doors are a hallmark of Islamic architecture. Historically, these allowed for ventilation and light while maintaining privacy.
* Geometric Carvings: Notice the repeating "V" patterns (zig-zags) and star motifs.
These are traditional moorish patterns often found on the famous "andalusian Doors."
* Material: Authentic versions are typically carved from cedar, woods that are durable and resistant to the humid coastal climate.
* Hardware: The metal ring pulls and visible hinges are traditional accents that complement the dark, stained wood.
History & Origin
The style emerged from the levante, a melting pot where trade routes brought together various cultures.
* Arab Influence: The geometric precision and the mashrabiya lattice.
* moorish Influence: The heavy use of metal studs and specific floral or star-shaped carvings often seen on chests brought by Arab merchants.
* African Influence: The local timber and the specific bold, rhythmic execution of the carvings.
Common Uses Today
While the smaller "arabian chests" were originally used as bridal dowry trunks or for storing spices and gold, larger sideboards like the one is the pictures are popular in modern "Global Chic" or "Bohemian" interior design.
They serve as:
* Dining Room Buffets: Perfect for storing linens and tableware.
* Media Consoles: The lattice work is actually great for modern tech because it allows infrared signals from remotes to pass through and prevents electronics from overheating.
